How God Guides Us? Psalm 25 – Summary

We live in a complicated world surrounded by choice, but how do we discern God’s voice in it? How do we get guidance from him? God wants to help you make choices that will bring true happiness and joy in your life. Should you wait for a dream or a voice in your head, or writing on the bathroom mirror? Maybe, God could use one of those methods to guide you, but today I want us to think about how God normally guides his children looking at Psalm 25. How do you and I receive the wisdom of God for our everyday choices?

God guides the humble – v. 9

Humility is a synonym for meekness. Meekness means ‘strength under control.’ Like Moses, a man of strength, vision, purpose, power –he was a broken man. His strength was under control! All bottled up for the Masters use. Humility is saying God I trust your wisdom over mine! It means submitting all of your strength, your potential, your wisdom to his control.

God guides those who are obedient to keeping his covenant – v. 10

For us keeping God’s covenant means obeying him. The entire Bible is full of God’s instructions in how to live a rich and satisfying life! It’s NOT a book of rules! It’s a book of life! God knows what’s best for us, and he’s reveled it in his Word and we’re crazy not to obey it! God doesn’t just make rules for the sake of it, he knows that our obedience to him means really living. God is actually less bothered about what you do and more bothered about your willingness to obey him (1 Sam 15:22). When we are obedient to him we are declaring our trust in him.

God guides those who fear him, for he calls them friends – v. 12 & 14

Fear of the Lord is not a negative thing: it doesn’t mean being terrified of God. Fearing God is a good thing. It shows you are in a positive relationship with him. That you respect him and trust his ways over your own. This fear of the Lord is crucial to a healthy relationship with Him. We exist to be in friendship with God. Jesus offers you his friendship, but he offers it on his terms, through the cross. And the more you become a friend of God, the more he reveals himself to you and the more you get to know him, the more you will experience his guidance.

God guides those who wait for him v. 3, 5, 21.

The key word with respect to God’s guidance is the word wait! You see, God’s timing is as important as his will. In fact you cannot separate the two. But God doesn’t give quick answers. God is working in our waiting. He is teaching us things in our waiting – things that we wouldn’t learn otherwise! God is far more interested in what you become than what you do. He’s interested in developing your character because you will take your character to heaven!
